Review : BenQ XL2420T Monitor

This time it’s in the form of the BenQ XL2420T 24-inch LED backlit high-performance gaming monitor. BenQ state that it’s perfect for competitive FPS games and has been co-developed with Counter-Strike legends, so we’re expecting great things from the XL2420T. Let’s take a closer look…

Up on opening the rather large box, we’re greeted with a whole range of accessories and cables (pictured below).

Items included in the box are:

User manual
VGA cable
DVI-DL (Dual-Link) cable
USB cable
S Switch (Display setting switcher)
Dust cover

The monitor features a black and red theme throughout and has a relatively slim design that means you’ll have plenty of room on your desk still.

You’ve also got the BenQ logo in the centre of the monitor border.

As with the previous BenQ monitor we reviewed, the RL2240H, there are no labels on the monitor buttons featured on the right-hand side. Whilst this could be confusing, just lightly hovering over the touch sensitive buttons will reveal the popup menu on the display.

Moving around to the left side of the monitor you’ll find two USB 2.0 ports as well as a headphone jack.

The XL2420T features a cable hole in the stand for the various monitor and power cables, as well as a hook at the top of the stand. The cable hole and hook are a bright red gaming colour.

With regards to the connectivity on the BenQ Xl2420T, you’ve got quite a selection to choose from including D-sub, DVI-DL (dual link), two HDMI ports, DisplayPort (1.2) and also a headphone jack. On the far left you’ve got the port for the monitor cable.

To test the BenQ Xl2420T we used the monitor for around one week. During that one week we tested a variety of different situations including gaming, general use and watching films.

Gaming

First of all we played a couple of games.  We used Call of Duty 4 and Battlefield: Bad Company 2 for our tests.

First off, thanks to the amazingly bright LED display, combined with the all new black equalizer, the whole experience was really good and actually improved our end score slightly due to the equalizer brightening darkened areas of the game without over-exposing other lighter areas.

When compared with compared my AOC 24-inch monitor, which isn’t an LED monitor and doesn’t have amazing specs, you could definitely notice the colour difference between the two. This greatly affected my overall performance due to the fact that I couldn’t see the enemy at various times in the game on the AOC monitor.

The same happened with Bad Company 2 as well. The darkened areas, on a few of the maps, were brightened on the Xl2420T, but not on the AOC monitor, which slightly affected the overall gaming experience again.

General use and Films

After using the BenQ in a dual-monitor configuration you can definitely see the performance and quality differences between the XL2420T and a standard 24-inch monitor.

The maximum resolution for the Xl2420T is 1920 x 1080, which is fairly standard for a monitor of this size.

Thanks to the high quality LED display, 2ms response time and ability to adjust the height and angle of the monitor very easily, our experience with the XL2420T has been brilliant once again.

The overall look of films on the Xl2420T is also great, and thanks to the variety of different display options, you’ve got a whole range of options that you can customize to your own personal preference.

S Switch

The S Switch has been designed to allow quick and easy switching between three of your chosen display settings. So, for example, you could have a gaming, work and film option on the S Switch that you can use at any time and the display settings will change accordingly.

To save on space, the S Switch can also be attached to the base of the monitor due to it being the same triangular shape.

The BenQ XL2420T also supports NVIDIA 3D Vision 2 to allow you to experience games and other media in completely realistic 3D. You can also hook up the BenQ XL2420T to your console of choice so that you can switch between both your PC and console whenever you like.

Verdict

Overall, the BenQ Xl2420T has performed extremely well from in-game performance to general use and film. The vibrant colours and quality of the display is up there with the best.

The Xl2420T retails for around £275 on eBuyer, but some prices vary depending on the site you purchase it from.

We’d definitely recommend the BenQ Xl2420T to anyone who loves gaming. The large display is also ideal for web and graphic designers, such as myself.
